The new standard is officially implemented and the motor industry has fully entered the IE3 high-efficiency era

Publish Time: 2025-03-26

With the proposal of China's "3060" dual carbon target, "energy saving and efficiency improvement" has become a hot topic in the industrial field. The innovation of technical products and the introduction of mandatory standards are important means to reduce carbon emissions and achieve energy saving and efficiency improvement.

Starting from June 1, 2021, the mandatory national standard "GB18613-2020 Motor Energy Efficiency Limit Value and Energy Efficiency Grade" will be officially implemented. Energy-efficient motors below IE3 (international standard) will be forced to stop production, which also means that the domestic motor industry has fully entered the IE3 high-efficiency era.

After many years, the new standard for motor energy efficiency has finally arrived.

According to the new national standard, from the date of implementation of the standard, IE3 efficiency will become China's lowest three-phase asynchronous motor energy efficiency limit value (three-level energy efficiency), and three-phase asynchronous motors below IE3 energy efficiency limit value will not be allowed to be produced and sold, indicating that China's small and medium-sized three-phase asynchronous motor efficiency level has been raised by one level again. The new national standard also lists IE4 efficiency as a secondary energy-saving evaluation value indicator.

Differences between the new and old national standard motor energy efficiency labels

Although motors rarely appear in the public eye, they are almost everywhere. From industrial pumps, fans and conveyor belts in the manufacturing industry to compressors in electrical equipment and HVAC systems in buildings, motors provide power for a large number of basic applications in modern life. Electric motors account for about 75% of industrial electricity consumption and more than half of the total electricity consumption in society, so the implementation of the new motor standard is crucial to improving energy utilization and achieving China's carbon reduction goals.

In fact, in recent years, against the backdrop of global energy consumption reduction, the international consensus on IE3 as a mandatory energy efficiency standard has long been reached. my country is one of the major motor manufacturing countries. If my country's motor products want to enter the global market, the energy efficiency level of motor products must meet the technical requirements of the international market. The implementation of mandatory motor high energy efficiency standards is of great significance to the transformation and upgrading of the industry, further promoting the development and application of high-efficiency motors in China, and making real contributions to the country's dual carbon goals.

For motor manufacturers, after the implementation of the new standard, motors that do not meet the IE3 energy efficiency limit shall not be produced or sold, and users shall not purchase them. Therefore, motor companies must be fully prepared to produce and sell IE3 and above energy efficiency motors in terms of technology, equipment, process, materials and sales.

At the national level, the main problem at present is whether the country can take strong measures to force the elimination of IE2, otherwise the technical advantages of IE3 will be difficult to truly reflect. Relevant departments should strengthen the supervision and punishment of the production and use of low-efficiency products through supervision and spot checks, special spot checks on motor energy efficiency labels, energy-saving supervision, etc., so that IE2 motors can be eliminated as soon as possible. On the other hand, in order to encourage the promotion and implementation of IE3, the country should continue to increase the incentive policies for enterprises that produce and use IE3 motors, actively explore how to better implement the standards, cultivate the market, and ensure that the domestic motor industry can fully enter the IE3 era as soon as possible.

Before the implementation of the new national standard, foreign-funded motor companies with strong technical capabilities have taken the lead.

As a global technology leader, ABB is one of the drafting units of the new national standard for motors. ABB Motion Control Division began to produce IE3 motors in China as early as 2013, and began to produce IE5 motors in 2020, promoting the rapid and widespread application of the latest motor technology to reduce energy consumption as soon as possible.

Siemens, which is also actively involved in the work related to the standard "GB18613-2020 Electric Motor Energy Efficiency Limits and Energy Efficiency Grades", also announced that both the mature low-voltage motor product series and the newly launched new low-voltage motor product series meet the IE3 energy efficiency grade requirements. Siemens actively helps enterprises respond to the national call for energy conservation and consumption reduction and achieve green development with energy conservation and efficiency improvement.
